Aluminum production in South Africa

Aluminum production in South Africa is relatively limited, as the country does not have significant bauxite reserves, which is the primary raw material used in aluminum production. Instead, South Africa imports most of its aluminum from other countries, particularly Mozambique, where bauxite is mined and refined into alumina, the intermediate product used in aluminum production. 

South Africa has several aluminum smelters, including Hillside Aluminum, which is jointly owned by BHP Billiton and Anglo American, and Mozal Aluminum, which is owned by South32 and Mitsubishi. These smelters primarily use imported alumina to produce aluminum ingots, which are used in a variety of applications, including automotive, construction, and packaging industries.
